You have to consider that education is one of the most important investments that you will ever make in your whole life. This is why your parents save money in order for you to get in a good college and finish it. As a parent, you want your child to have the best education money can buy. With a college education, your children will be able to live a good life.

College education is required by many companies today in order to have a spirited workforce that will keep their company competitive in the world of business. Whatever fields your child chooses, you have to remember that college education will land them that job they want and also secure their future.

You also have to consider that the high paying jobs today requires a college degree. If your child doesn’t have a college degree, then the chances for them to find the job they want with good compensation will be very hard.

However, what if you can’t afford to pay for college? With the decline in today’s economy, just making ends meet is a challenge. So, you may now ask, what about your child? What happens to your plans in saving money for them in order to get in a good college?

One good way to get your child to a good college is by letting them play soccer. It is a fact that it may seem too good to believe that soccer can take your child to college. However, there are good colleges out there that offer college soccer scholarship. They send out scouts to different schools to evaluate different soccer players and offer the best soccer player a college scholarship. This is one of the best and the most common ways that your child can earn a scholarship.

If your child loves playing soccer, you should consider investing in this sport in order to improve your child’s soccer skills. Armed with good soccer skills will prepare them for athletic scholarship grants that many colleges are sponsoring. However, your child should be the best in the sport in order to get noticed.

You have to consider that soccer isn’t really a very good career choice for your child. The odds of getting a career out of soccer are very close to nil. You just have to think of soccer as a ticket for your child to attend a good college where they can learn the field they choose and prepare them for the future.

You should advice your child that being soccer pro will be a very hard thing to achieve and they should also study in the field they choose in order to let them have a second option on getting the job they want. You have to advice them that although they should work hard in their soccer skills, they should also work hard in their academics and study hard in order to prepare them in case they don’t make it as a professional soccer player.

When applying for a college soccer scholarship, you can get your child to be involved in the Olympic Development Program. This program will increase their chances in getting a college scholarship and will also let your child polish their skills in playing soccer. It is also recommended that you child should play for a good soccer club as well as in their high school.

Always remember that college soccer scholarships are sought by a lot of students. By having the proper skills and the proper discipline, your child will be able to play soccer in college and at the same time, earn their scholarship.

Parenting college students is a never ending responsibility. While there are many areas in which parents can assist these emerging adults, it is in the arena of finances that parents can often make a huge difference in the lives of their children.

As you parent your college student consider what responsibility your child has in the pursuit of their college education. This responsibility should be discussed. After college graduation, who pays this debt? During the college years, will the student have any financial obligation? Parenting a college student is a golden opportunity to teach financial responsibility.

Financial lessons should begin before the child leaves for college. Middle School and High School is when the lessons should begin. Parents tend to worry about a student’s expenditures and this is an appropriate worry. If parents don’t teach financial lessons to their children while they are still living at home, disaster is waiting in the wings during the college years.

Lessons Taught in the Launching Years

Before leaving for college, parents need to discuss financial expectations with their college student, including the plan for how many years they expect to be in college. This affects the number of credits they will need to carry each semester/term. The usual is 15 credits. Students taking 9 credits are taking up to 6 years to get an undergraduate degree. So it is important to talk about this so there are no surprises.

Prior to that first semester in college, parents and children need to discuss money management and the budgeting of funds. What are the expectations? Will they have a parents credit card? Do they have their own credit card? I personally suggest that only debit cards be used. No credit cards.

The discussion of finances prevents any surprises on either side, and it encourages open communication. Money management is very difficult initially. A parent might consider a weekly allowance until the student learns to manage their money. If they get their allowance monthly, it is often spent the first week or two. The last 2 weeks is when the whining begins… So, it is imperative for parents to set boundaries and to provide clear guidance. It is nice to set the student up for success, too. Do everything you can think of to help the student be successful. Adapting to college and being responsible for yourself is a big transition.

In order for the college student to establish independence they need to learn to handle their finances proficiently. So much is learned during the college years that is not taught in a class room. College Students need to be reminded of what their goal is. The goal is a college degree, independence and a career that they enjoy.

Spending money foolishly increases their college debt and does nothing to build their resume. It only postpones financial freedom.

Keep Your Eye on the Prize

Parents must remind the college student to keep their eye on the prize, which is graduation. At times, 4 years, seems like an eternity but it flies by. It is so easy to forget that student loans are just that. Loans. Students need to be reminded of this and when possible they should limit their college debt.

Credit cards are fools gold. The credit card companies send college students credit cards constantly. My recommendation is to forbid the use of credit cards. Period. To a young person, there is no reality to a credit card. Adults have problems with credit cards so why would we expect a young adult to have a good handle on using a credit card. It is a very difficult concept to learn because you cannot see the debt. The student only sees the minimum payment.

A debit card has a monetary limit to withdrawals. If the student receives an allowance, the parent can make a deposit, and the student can make the withdrawal. Parents can consider placing some financial responsibility on the students by making them responsible for their spending money. If you ask them to pay for the books, I am afraid books will not be purchased because text books are over priced and hard to resell.

Somehow, parents need to teach their young that difficult lesson, “there are no free rides in life.” This applies to a college education. Especially during the summer, a student can be expected to earn their spending money for the following year. When they are responsible for earning their own spending money, there’s a good chance they will be more careful how they spend it.

When parenting a college student, one of the best lessons a parent can give their child is a sense of financial responsibility. It’s one of the best winning strategies for success in life.

Finishing a college degree could definitely help a person secure employment, retain and even get promoted in his current job. However, for some older employees going back to school can be a bit awkward and at the same time difficult. There are many responsibilities, like family and work which could serve as a problem when trying to finish a degree. This is when getting an online college degree becomes an option.

Online college education is more flexible, allowing students to squeeze together time for family, work and studies. Online students would eventually learn valuable time management methods and develop self-learning strategies. However, the internet offers a lot of online college websites and online courses. It could be overwhelming. How do you start?

Here are some easy steps that you could do to get started with your degree.

Step1. Identify what kind of online degree program you are interested it. There are schools that would offer associate and bachelor degrees. There are also other online colleges offering degree programs in Master’s and Doctorate. You could start by identifying what kind of post-secondary education or higher education you are after.

Step 2. To narrow things, also identify what field you will be specializing in. There are surveys showing that main interests in online education would be in the field of business, healthcare, education and engineering.

Step3. After identifying what degree program you want, you could start with looking for schools. There are different online schools and universities. Determine which online colleges and universities are offering your field. When looking for schools, remember to check its accreditation. Accrediting agencies like U.S. Department of Education and Council for Higher Education Accreditation are granting certificates to those institution that they have evaluated and passed their standards.

Step4. You could have a few online colleges listed on your choices, you could narrow it down by looking on their fees, if they are offering any kind of financial aid, alumni success rate and reputation. It is better to call the college hotlines or offices to inquire about their programs and cost. Also, there are some online colleges that would still require face-to-face sessions between teacher and students.

Step5. You would have to secure forms from the online college and complete it. They would usually require your high school transcript of grades to be submitted along with the form. If applying for financial aid, communicate or talk with school’s appointed person that will handle such affairs. They would usually require additional paperwork for those applying for financial assistance.

Step6. After enrolling, check the class schedule. Some online college degrees would use asynchronous classes. With this kind of classes, students and instructors don’t have to be online at the same time to work on the course works. Instructors would usually provide details and let their students work on it on their own time. While there are also synchronous classes which would require students to be online on a specific period of time to conduct online discussions through teleconferencing, video conferencing or chatting

Most students have come to expect an annual rise in tuition. The cost of a college education can increase from 3.5 percent to 6.0 percent. Increasing cost of energy and the struggle to compete with colleges that have large endowments is putting colleges out of reach for certain students. Colleges are obligated to increase their level of security. Parents expect a safe environment for students who are in urban and rural communities. Many colleges are offering a wide range of transportation options for students. Some colleges are establishing contracts with transportation companies who will manage on-campus buses and schedules. Students can feel safe traveling from the main campus to local residents in their community.

The changing economy is putting new demands on college budgets. Students are applying to five colleges to increase their chances of getting admitted and to identify the least expensive college. Colleges are facing challenges in terms of reaching their enrollment goals because students are not making a firm decision right away. Students need to have options when they consider the cost of earning a four year degree. Students must consider the cost of travel to colleges that are far away. This can lead to an inability to travel home frequently.

Colleges are obligated to meet the requirements of the accrediting agencies that approve their curriculum. Some college presidents are increasing the number of professors and research activities to ensure that their college is reaccredited. Additional research can require millions of dollars in an institution’s resources. Students will not enroll in a college that is not accredited. Also, outstanding professors will not aspire to work in a college that is not highly regarded in various aspects of a colleges’ curriculum.

Colleges are offering online courses to students who need an alternative education choice. The students can benefit by eliminating the cost of traveling to the campus for a three hour course. Some students enjoy the online courses because they can meet people who are in locations around the world. The online courses are unique because they can be delivered at the time of the instruction and it can also be recorded for later student viewing. Colleges gain an advantage because they can offer online courses of professors who are on sabbatical. More online courses can be expected within the next five years. As these courses expand they can reach the international audiences of students, instructors and researchers. The possibilities for international exchanges of information are limitless.

College stability is essential to the competitive edge that the United States maintains in its workforce. We are faced with the possibility of closing colleges who cannot keep up with their enrollment goals. This is particularly worrisome for colleges that do not have large endowments. College administrators must come up with a new paradigm regarding how they will work. For example due to the recent oil crises several colleges created a four day work week. College employees worked ten hours each day and did not work on Friday. Difficult college budget challenges should inspire innovative approaches to educate future generations of leaders.

Every college student is hoping to get, in each semester, some scholarship money in order to help them to pay their college education. You could have luck and get it or you may have to tighten your budget in order to pay the school. Let’s discuss about what you are doing wrong when you’re pursuing a college scholarship:

1. Many students are applying for only one or two scholarships. Wrong! You should apply to as many scholarships as you can, then you will have a better chance in getting at least one!

2. Students also tend not to follow and not to take into consideration the directions and the conditions that the college imposes in order to get the scholarship. Also wrong! If you do not respect their terms you will not receive a scholarship!

3. Another mistake that students often do when applying to get a scholarship is not filling the form. Make sure that you fill every field even if you think that it is not important!

4. One important mistake that students tend not to take into consideration is how legibly and clearly is the application written. If you meditate over this you will find that it is hard even for a scholarship reviewer to read a couple of illegibly and unclear applications. They will not even bother to read you application. So, is it that hard to try to write nicely for some money?

5. You should also try to make at least grammar and spelling mistakes as you can even though you have an easy to read application. You should also try and have your application corrected by someone. Asking for suggestions from them on how to improve your essay would be also a good idea.

6. A deadly mistake is missing the deadline. Everyone forgets and we know how agitated and how chaotic is the life of a student, but, you should make your best to remember the deadline.

7. We all know how full of scams and tricks has become our life nowadays, so, don’t think that college scholarship don’t enter in this group. In order to avoid this kind of scams try to keep yourself away from any scholarship programs that promises to do the work or asks you for money or your card information’s!

Of course these are not all the common mistakes that students make when they apply to college scholarship. I hope that providing some of them will make you aware of the mistakes and you will try to avoid them as much as you can.

I have heard it said that education is the best investment. Whoever said that could probably afford their college fees. Don’t get me wrong. Certainly I am all for higher education. At the same time, I am not a votary of being under unnecessary debt. This is where the contradiction arises.

What complicates this conundrum is the fact that if you go to college, you are more likely to be able to pay your debts. So you have to get an educational loan (and a college education) to be able to repay loans in the future. I guess you can see why I call it a conundrum!

First of all, realize that you can get a college loan. Sounds obvious, right? Not really! I have heard of many candidates who hesitate applying for a college loan as they have a poor credit history. Surely, poor credit history will make it tougher to get an educational loan. But, it is far from impossible. In fact, I think that going ahead and getting a good education is one of the great methods of trying to come out of a financial jam.

Having said that, I do not want to sound like I am very forgiving of a loan-tangle. Barring exceptions, most people get into a debt trap due to irresponsibility. So, do the adult thing today and acknowledge fault. Then promise yourself that you will do the right thing after college and repay all your existing loans – including your student loan.

When looking for a students loan, make sure to explore the usual options first: The Subsidized / Unsubsidized Stafford Loan, the Federal Perkins Loan, the Federal+ loan for parents, the Direct PLUS loan, the Federal consolidation loan, the Private student loans, and the like.

What you need to keep in mind is: Is the specific loan you are applying to available for undergraduate studies or graduate studies (or both)? Is the loan need based or merit based? What documents will you need to demonstrate financial need? Are there any specific loan options available to you if you are applying to specific programs, e.g., Federal Nursing Loan and the Health Professions Student Loans?

Keeping all this in mind will be a good first step towards getting a students loan. Remember your education should be a stepping stone to a better life, not a means to get stuck into a deeper financial hole.

During the housing market’s heyday, when home values were at an all-time high, it wasn’t uncommon for families to finance a college education by borrowing against their home, or for schools to take home equity into the financial aid equation, requiring families to contribute 5 or 6 percent of their home’s equity toward tuition.

But with home prices dropping by the steepest annual rate on record — plunging 19 percent in January of last year — home equity is no longer a viable line of credit, particularly in the nation’s hardest hit housing markets. In January 2009, home values were down 35 percent in Phoenix, 32.5 percent in Las Vegas, and 32.2 percent in San Francisco, according to Standard & Poor’s/Case-Shiller 20-city housing index (“Report: Home Prices Slip in Seattle, but Plunge in Other Parts of U.S.,” The Seattle Times, March 31, 2009).

“With so many people up against the wall with declining home values,” said Philip Day, president of the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA), “the issue of using home equity loans for tuition is almost rendered moot” (“College Tuition Not on the House,” The New York Times, April 3, 2009).

Colleges, for their part, have, over the last decade, started to move away from considering home equity when determining a student’s financial aid award, after finding that including home equity as an asset was financially overburdening families of modest income.

More Families Turn to Private Student Loans

Home equity and home equity lines of credit haven’t been the only financial resources to fall victim to the ongoing recession and the ailing credit markets. Credit card companies have cut credit limits and closed credit card accounts, while investments and 529 college savings plans have tanked in value, leaving families without the cash and credit they’ve historically relied on to help pay for college.

Increasingly, students and families have been turning to private student loans to supplement federal college loans, grants, and other financial aid. But in the current economy, even private student loans can be hard to come by.

Since the fall of 2007, more than 40 student loan companies have suspended their private student loan programs, according to FinAid.org. And the remaining private loan programs, in a strangely resonating echo of the admissions processes at elite universities, have become much more selective, taking only cream-of-the-crop applicants with the most sterling credit histories.

Just like lenders in the auto loan, home mortgage, and credit card industries, student loan lenders have tightened their credit restrictions for private student loans. Between soaring unemployment, dwindling assets, and past-due bills dragging down credit scores, fewer families are finding that they qualify for credit-based private loans.

Private student loans, offered by banks and other private lenders, are credit-based student loans not backed by the federal government, as federal college loans are. Unlike federal parent and student loans, which carry fixed rates, private student loans are typically variable-rate loans. Private loans also generally don’t offer the same flexible and income-based repayment alternatives or the payment-deferment options that are guaranteed by all federal education loans.

But while private student loans may lack many of the benefits of federal student loans, federal financial aid may often not cover the full cost of college: In addition to tuition and fees, students will have thousands of dollars in education-related expenses like room and board, textbooks, transportation, and other living expenses. Private loans can help families to bridge the college-cost gap that federal student loans and other financial aid don’t cover.

College Costs and Financial Aid Playing a Bigger Role in Decision-Making

At the end of February 2009, nearly 3 million federal financial aid applications had been processed — a jump of more than 20 percent over the same period last year, according to NASFAA.

“I think the biggest shock to many families is that they might have to make that tough decision and say ‘I can’t afford to send you to where you want to go,’ ” Jacquelyn Nealon, vice president of enrollment services at New York Institute of Technology, told Newsday. “For many of them it might be the first time they’ve ever had to say ‘no’ to their child for a financial reason” (“Recession Forces Changes on Prospective Collegians,” Newsday, March 29, 2009).

This recession is forcing many families to redefine “safety schools” based on their ability to pay, rather than their child’s chances of being accepted, reports Newsday. More than a third of prospective college first-year students and parents surveyed by the Princeton Review said they were applying to more “financial aid safety” schools than they originally planned.
