How to take a year off after high school and apply to college after?

I want to take a year off after high school to make sure if I really want to do what I am deciding to choose as a career. I will hold an internship and want to apply to college the following year in fall 2010. Can I still apply to colleges as a freshman and not a transfer? How does this work out with reccomendations and all?

You only apply as a transfer student if you have more than a year’s worth (sometimes two year’s worth) of college credits. You’d be applying as a freshman. Sure, you can take a year off. Just take all the tests and ask for letters of recommendation before you leave school – that way the teachers will have something to refer to a year later.

Some colleges will allow you to apply and be accepted as a regular freshman applicant, and then allow you to defer your enrollment by a year. The advantage of doing this would mean that you can get everything from your high school taken care of first, then get to enjoy your whole “gap year” without having to worry about college apps!
