Do the SATs an standardized tests matter if I’m applying to college for Art?
I’m a pretty decent artist when it comes to painting, drawing, sculpting, etc. I would like to go to a university for animation, digital art, and fine arts. However, all of the schools that I want to apply to (BU, Delaware, Syracuse…) have pretty high standards for SATs.
I’m honestly not the best test taker… Do you think they will see past my not-excellent test scores and judge me based on my portfolio first?
I took the March exam today. I’m not really sure how I did, but I spent months preparing.
forget SATs, talent is what counts
SAT matter no matter what
they determin a lot
so i would do ur best!

yes. They do matter. They do not have to be as good as other colleges but a 1600 is straight.
it doesnt matter what you are taking, you still have to take basic classes like math and english stuff…. you still need to take it and do your best.
If you go to a specific art school where everyone is studying art, then the SAT’s do not really matter.
However, if you want to apply to an art department at a university, then standardized tests matter much more.
Well the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan (don’t let the name deceive you) has a very excellent art program and they do not have high SAT requirements, regardless of the high education delivered. (I am applying there and my sister is currently a student)
Also the Rhode Island School of Design is an amazing art college, and they do not let SAT scores really influence acceptance. (my cousin attends there)
I guess they are smart and take into consideration students talents and potential instead of what a standardized test says.
Not everyone is good at taking tests, no matter how smart they are.
The educational board is becoming more aware of that fact that a lot of unrelated aspects, other than intelligence, factor into a moderate/low SAT score.
good luck in whatever you decide!
yes, SAT scores count. Unles you go to one of the for-profit chain schools.
If its an art school then it matters a lot less. They let in a lot more students solely on their portfolio and will make more exceptions for poor grades and/or low test scores. I worked in the admissions office at RISD when I was a student there and contrary to one of your other answers they DO deny applications just because the student has low SAT scores. Its more common if the application has borderline portfolio or they’re like ‘running out’ of spots though. RISD is a little stricter than average about admissions though, this is probably done less at other art schools.
But these all seem to be normal colleges that you applied to? They are not usually very forgiving in terms of grades or SAT scores sorry. If your SAT scores fall outside their range you will have a much harder time being admitted even if you have a good portfolio. Its kind of hard to guess, I don’t know much about these schools admissions procedures sorry. But chances are if your scores are a lot lower than their recommended low you won’t be admitted.
