After applying colleges my son became sick and planning to repeat his sr year in HS. Should he withdaw appl?
My son applied to colleges this year. During that time he was diagnosed with major depression and had to miss several days of school. In fact now he wants to repeat his senior year in High school. He has one acceptance letter so far. What should he do? Should he withdraw his application from the colleges he hasn’t heard yet? also try to deffer the one he has been accepted? He will not have the high school diploma this year.

As soon as he has been accepted by a college, and immediately for the one where he as already been accepted, he should ask the colleges in a postal letter if they will defer his acceptance by one year. He should state that his high school graduation is being delayed on account of an illness.
If the college is in the USA, he should mention that he is requesting the deferment under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
No, just wait until he gets his acceptance letters. What is listed above is not necessary. Just send a quick e mail saying that you would like to defer admissions a year. You do not have to provide a reason, and I would advise you not to. Depression has developed a bad reputation among ignorant people (which most seem to be), so don’t say anything. When I deferred my admissions I just said that I wanted to push it back, you do not have to provide a reason. You just send a little e mail to the admissions department (he needs to send it, not you) stating his full name and id number is they gave him one. I think that mine was about three sentences long. It is not a big deal at all.
